Dr Smith is a practitioner-turned-educator. His past career experience, to Managing Director level of Multinationals, is grounded in many different consumer focussed environments where he gained first-hand international experience across varied cultures. Dr Smith’s significant business experience complements his proven academic know how and success in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students and supporting PhD researchers.
An accomplished senior executive who tirelessly works to include practical insights within a robust academic framework, Dr Smith passionately including his real-world understanding within academic teaching to enhance classroom engagement and student learning. Dr Smith’s decision to complete the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme has further crystallised his extensive practitioner experience and proven academic know how. His earlier career includes involvement in major research projects that shaped the strategic direction of the firm. For example, the adoption of computer-based learning to facilitate staff training; collaborating with scholars to test customer loyalty theories and practical understanding in a real-life setting; international research across Europe and America, leading to the creation of an awards winning business concept in the United Kingdom (UK). His approach and successes are underpinned by a solid grasp of both theory and practice. He is recognised by his peers and organisations, such as the National Skills Academy for Retail (NSAR), for his expertise and included on Vend’s 2018 list of top 100 global retail influencers. He has presented on many UK and international platforms on business related topics and is often invited to participate on expert panels.

Dr Smith started teaching international students at the University of Chester in 2013 before being engaged as core module leader on the visiting Chinese student programme in 2018. His successful engagement with staff and students at Dalian Minzu University at the end of 2018 has further developed the positive relationship between the university. His intensive programme of lectures on ‘Intercultural Communication’ was very well received, leading to this Chinese university retaining him to teach more students in China.

Dr Smith is an active researcher and is presenting papers at major conference and working towards publishing his thesis in highly regarded journal.
